Guy Ferrel - The Lucille

Photobucket

These days, I work in search of information and artifacts relating to the early days of rock'n'roll in Quebec. An exhibition will follow the next few months. This project is an initiative of the Museum of rock'n'roll . Stay tuned!

Here's a disc that I heard during this research but, because of its release date, must be subtracted the selection of the exhibition.

Guy Ferrel, whose real name is Gerard Thibodeau, was a true love of rock'n'roll. It has launched a handful of 45 rpm and remains somewhat obscure.

Ferrel launches its first 45 laps early in the summer of 1965. According to the ranking Disc-o-Logue Collections Canada, the first single would have climbed to top 50 ranking period in June and July '65.

Guy Ferrel - Lucille

Despite popular success, commercial success, He does not seem to go. This 45 rpm is very difficult to trace today. Especially with its beautiful cover photo that shows a smiling Ferrel on-looks-almost-cracking and shows her wonderful Gibson SG. The easiest way to put the tab on the song, it's still hard to find compilation The biggest current hit on which it appears. His version of

Lucille is incredible, unique, excellent!
It starts with a strange effect Echolette - not unlike that heard on Walking Martians Pharaohs.
Then, throughout the songs, we Ferrel Guy launches LUCILLE! a sensationalist tone, supported by a strange chorus. Other
interesting feature ... When you listen well the song is meant Guy ferrel counting time of the song in the background "1-2-3" ... to what I read, these statements should have been removed to the mix. In my opinion, it adds a little singular element that makes this version even more unique.

Speaking of "1-2-3" in 1966, Ferrell recorded a cover of the song blue eyed soul 1-2-3 Len Barry. The result is excellent. I found this song on the blog yesterday was . Thank you!

Guy Ferrell - 1-2-3

The B side of the 45 towers 1-2-3 is a cover of It's A Man's, Man's, Man's World the Soul Brother # 1, James Brown. Ferrel was a clear intention to attack a soul and R & B repertoire.

There are also a cover of his discography Come on let's go Richie Valens under the name Dance . I look forward to that!

As an extra, the B-side single Lucille, the song Wherever you are, the less interesting, but still even very good, in a more pop.

1950's Girdle For Women

Armistis

The Armistis live, 1969

The mystery still hangs around the group L 'Armistis. Music as the only witness their passage on the Quebec scene of the late 60s, early 70s, there was a very good 45s soul and psychedelic tendencies, a bit funky around the edges.

Ben behold I found an article Featured Photo dated October 1969 which gives us a little more info about The Armistis.

The group would be from the neighborhood of St. Stanislas in Montreal. Maybe some of Montreal's origin could help me trace what name we know today that neighborhood?

The article gives us the names of three of the band members: Yves Venne (band leader, organ), Beliveau Dodo (voice) and Gérard Caron (bass). They have started under the name of Steve and His Fabulous Band and will be made known "by the way they attack the songs with vigor and brutality," according Featured Photos . Brutality? Whoa! Strange, but how attractive qualifier for a group peace & love which then adopted the name The Armistis (truce between armed hostilities in war)! Featured Photo

also informs us that at the time of writing, their manager, Gerald Monahan, is preparing to produce their debut album. The

Armistis - My life

Heritage PQ Note that you had also offered the MP3 of the song My Life, some time ago, in an excellent article about Quebec rockers of the 70s. Read here. One can also find my life on the compilation The Introuvables Vol. 20 of Discs Worth .

The first single was released in 1970 (in all likelihood), the R & B label of Tony Roman. Both pieces found there, My life and me Mice are actually twice. My life is Vehicle the Ides of March and Mouse me is Make Me Smile Chicago. Just then the sound of The Armistis very similar to that of white funk rock groups in Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears of the time. Another local group that has done very well like this, it Illustration , who composed the soundtrack for the legendary film After-Ski .

Moreover, it is none other than Jacques Crevier, which also provides the arrangements and the composition of a few songs on the soundtrack of After-Ski, who made the arrangements and orchestrations for The Armistis. Jacques Crevier gave a good figure and beautiful soul horn arrangements well on dozens of songs he has settled in Quebec in the late 60s. I heard that the blog Psyquébélique prepares us an article interview with About Jacques Crevier. I look forward to more!

The Armistis - Mouse me

Return to article Featured Photo . This is actually a review of a concert of The Armistis, given "Saturday" (the newspaper was published October 25, 1969 ...), the Disco-Cave, located in the basement of Place Laurier, Laurier. The unidentified critic seems to have Tripp about the show!

"This is a new band that makes good music and moves plenty of air, they dance jump, take their shirts, are having a field day and as much as it pleases them, certainly. "rave.

We also learn that, that evening was a celebration of the singer and bassist of the training and that for this occasion, a giant cake was offered to the public with the middle, a Serge Laprade-surprise! Wow! Then Yves Venne is mounted on the organ and would be made chanted slogans like "Peace and Brotherhood" "It must be quite a party.

I did not find traces of Yves Venne. J'me wondering if there is a link to do with Stéphane Venne? Probably not. After few searches on the web, I found a reference to a musical director and organist named Yves Venne for English Catholic parish, which I could not confirm the exact geographical location. The

Armistis probably played a few years in Montreal, then, is very likely that their members are scattered here and there in other groups. But for now, we do not know!

If you were part of the Armistis or have other infos about the band, please come!

In addition, the original covers of The Armistis:

The Ides of March - Vehicle

Chicago - Make me smile

-----------------------------------
L'Armistis were a cool funk rock band à la Blood, Sweat and Tears. On their sole yet excellent 45, they cover The Ides of March's Vehicle, which becomes Ma vie in french, and Chicago's Make Me Smile, Souris-moi, in french. Dig it.
