Georges Thurston - Mrs Garou - Ball Glam!

Second in a mini-series on the "other" career of the famous George Thurston, aka Boule Noire. Recently, I directed my research toward the Thurston solo career, before he knows the success under the nickname discoid we know it.

summarize. Thurston launches first 45 laps solo in 1968. He then joined the group The 25th Regiment, which separated around 1971.

The order of release of his solo records following is not easily determined, but considering the date appearing on the one before us today, we bet that we are dealing here with his first album post-25e Regiment. We are talking about 1972.

In '72, England, David Bowie, T. Rex and Slade others are at the top of their careers. The influence of the U.S. New York Dolls and Lou Reed is no stranger to this new musical trend they represent all the glam rock.

several Quebec artists have flirted with glam rock, often later. Angelo "Angie" Finaldi, Tony Roman and their friends , Richard Tate, Violetti, St. Clair, Beauregard besides several groups as Moonquake , Mack, etc., which were inspired. Later, Danger, The 222's Tony Roman and always with the label Montréco Punk Rock , all gave a strong tendency to glam rock punk.

This means that in 1972, when George Thurston decided to tackle the repertoire of Marc Bolan aka T. Rex, it is a little ahead of the wave that followed and the result is amazing. And it is with the help of Tony Roman, implementing, adapting Metal Guru, T. Rex, in French.

the original look.
The album The Slider T. Rex was launched in July 1972, following the huge success of its predecessor, Electric Warrior (1971), which contains a hymn of seventies rock, Bang Gong (Get It On) . Excellent Telegram Sam and Metal Guru are selected for the single promotion The Slider. Unfortunately, success does not go in North America.

Thurston and Roman still see it as an opportunity to ride the wave and record all glam Madam Garou.

Georges Thurston - Madam Garou

label is on this simple action that seems, in 1972. This same label in the early 1970s, also gave us records of Pierre Perpall, Jenny Rock, The Mersey's, etc.. But who was behind this label?

lyrics Garou Madam seem harmless and innocent. Simple story of a young man in love and lost in his feelings.

Musically, however, is devilishly successful. The instrumentation and production are very close to the original. The arrangements are tasty, rich and righteous.

This recovery seems very strange in the musical evolution of Thurston. Something tells me that the influence and ideas of Tony Roman, already lit by the glam rock, probably much to see in George's decision to interpret Metal Guru.

This test will not find on Thurston's career, nor in the history of Quebec music. It had completely forgotten this simple, almost nowhere mentioned, yet bold, successful and reflecting a musical style and colorful glitter!

The "platform boots" and the glitter still follow fashion with the rise of disco, only the linkage with the rest of the career of George Thurston.

The B side of the disc, A place in my heart , though composed and produced by Gene Williams as well as written by Francis Guy, is much less interesting. Simple forgettable pop ballad with guitar sounds traveling between the fuzz and the dubious. Questionable artistic choices. Note also, the misspelling in the name of the artist. On both sides of the 45s, it says "George THURSON.
